I&#8217;m a tenured Associate Professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fer.unizg.hr\/en\/about\/structure_and_management\/departments\/department_of_applied_computing\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Applied Computing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fer.unizg.hr\/en\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unizg.hr\/homepage\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Zagreb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My primary expertise is in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n<p>My research focuses on the development and innovative application of the latest AI technology in various practical scenarios and areas, such as personalized education, e-learning, medicine, psychotherapy and emotion regulation, cognitive training, non-technical surveys, and humanitarian demining. <\/p>\n<p>In this context, I&#8217;m especially interested in <b>bridging the gap between traditional symbolic AI<\/b> \u2014 through knowledge representation formalisms like ontologies, knowledge graphs, and linked data, along with their corresponding automated reasoning services \u2014 <b>and contemporary connectionist AI models, such as Large Language Models (LLMs)<\/b>, for Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, information and document retrieval, and decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>My recent work has mostly focused on investigating the expansion of <b>generative AI systems and their impact on digital-pedagogy design<\/b>, student behavior, knowledge evaluations, and learning processes in blended learning environments. In my role as a teacher, I have personally experienced students&#8217; changing attitudes towards traditional educational approaches. I am convinced that something needs to be done urgently.<\/p>\n<p>Given the enormous growth of generative AI applications, with my associates I&#8217;m also investigating the shifting responsibilities of software engineers in the age of <b>vibe coding<\/b>. In addition, I serve as the <strong>Communication Activities Officer<\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.hr\/ieeesection\/english\">IEEE Croatia Section<\/a> Executive Committee<\/strong>. Previously, I served as <strong>Chair<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.hr\/ieeesection\/odjeli_chapteri\/tm14\">Technology Management Chapter (TEMS)<\/a> in IEEE Croatia Section.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, I&#8217;m serving as the vice-president of the <b>Scientific Council of the Croatian Mine Action Center\u2014Testing Center for Development and Training d.o.o.<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctro.hr\/en\/\">HCR-CTRO<\/a>). Previously, I was president of the Scientific Council of the Croatian Mine Action Center\u2014Testing Center for Development and Training d.o.o., and a member of the Thematic Innovation Council for Health and Quality of Life of the Republic of Croatia <a href=\"https:\/\/inovacijskaplatforma.hr\/en\/about-thematic-innovation-councils\">(TIV)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve delivered invited lectures and joined panels to discuss the <b>impact of AI in education and science, its future directions, ethical considerations, and potential to transform future industries.<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>I have also shared my insights through interviews in newspapers, on TV and radio, and digital media, while actively promoting <b>STEM fields \u2014 especially computer science and AI.<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/marko-horvat.name\/images\/predavanja_zajedno.jpg\" width=\"75%\"><br \/>\n<font size=2><i>Sharing insights on AI through invited lectures, panel discussions, and media appearances.<\/i><\/font><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><!--\nCurrently (<strong>August 2025<\/strong>), I am working in parallel on several smaller and <strong>three major science projects<\/strong>:\n\n\n<ol>\n\n\n<li><b>RANMI<\/b> - The aim of the project RANMI (Reprezentacija i analiza minskih podataka metodama umjetne inteligencije, <i>engl.<\/i> Representation and analysis of mining data using artificial intelligence methods) project is to create innovative cloud-based data platform architectures for the consolidation of minefield information obtained in the non-technical survey using data observatories, description logic, ontologies, expert systems, and blockchain.\n\n\n<ul>\n\n<li>\nLink: <a href=\"https:\/\/ranmi-fer.github.io\/\">Project homepage<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<br \/>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Virtual teaching assistant<\/b> - Personalized education chatbot as a tutor in computer science fundamentals based on open-source chatbot intelligent agents utilizing LLMs based on Generative AI.\n\n\n<ul>\n\n<li>\nLink: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7199846545045749761\/\">News<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<br \/>\n\n\n\n<li><b>CroQCI<\/b> - The CroQCI project aims to implement experimental quantum communication systems and networks, which will be supplemented and integrated with a range of classical secure communication technologies. This includes developing and testing devices and systems that combine the best of quantum, post-quantum classical, and quantum-enhanced techniques. My focus is on quantum machine learning.\n\n\n<ul>\n\n<li>\nLink: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fer.unizg.hr\/novosti?@=304bm#news_94045\">News<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n--><\/p>\n<p>As part of my multi-year ongoing research effort, I&#8217;m investigating novel approaches based on <strong>ontologies and knowledge graphs<\/strong> for the improvement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/320127162_A_brief_overview_of_affective_multimedia_databases\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>affective multimedia databases<\/b><\/a> with different applications in mental health and well-being. Also, over the years, I worked on a number of other scientific challenges and thought-provoking problems, such as AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).<\/p>\n<p>Previously, I have participated in many <strong>national and EU-funded research projects<\/strong> (H2020, COST, ESF, Erasmus+) and a great number of development projects with industry and government. The <a href=\"https:\/\/marko-horvat.name\/site\/about-me\/projects\/\">research projects<\/a> were concerned with the management of emotion and stress using intelligent computer systems, data mining of EEG time series data, linking of semantic and affective knowledge, and development of affective multimedia databases with tools for multifaceted document retrieval. <\/p>\n<p>Before\u00a0joining academia, for more than 10 years I worked for domestic and international ICT companies as a software engineer, project manager, and finally,\u00a0department manager.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I&#8217;ve acquired <strong>over 25 years of professional experience<\/strong> in computer science and engineering in higher education and\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>Before my current position at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, I served as the <strong>Vice Dean for Science, International Collaboration, and New Study Programs<\/strong> and held the title of Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvz.hr\/en\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Zagreb University of Applied Sciences<\/a> (TVZ).
